Riad P

Haven of peace of a famous designer

This riad is a gem of elegance and serenity. Located behind the Bahia palace in the Mellah, one of the oldest districts of the Medina of Marrakech, it is unusual in that it is accessible by road. Thus, the future happy owners will be able to live in the calm of a riad, in the middle of the old city but with sought-after accessibility with the car access a few meters from their own front entrance.

Once through the door, a haven of peace and tranquility reveals itself.  The riad was lovingly restored and completely renovated by the international designer and interior architect, Alain Martens. He was surrounded by celebrities and experienced a most engaging life in London and New York, he chose to retire to the red city, in a riad where he was able to express his respect for materials and local craftsmanship combined with sobriety, simplicity and clarity.

Mertens was one of the emblematic figures of art and fashion design in London in the 1970s. He was the first to bring to London contemporary European fashion designers including Armani, Cerruti, Chloé, Versace, Montana and Zegna. His social circle in London included famous names like Paula Welles (Orson’s wife), Judy, Countess of Linlithgow, Felicity Cadbury, actor Rupert Everett, artists David Hockney and Peter Blake, the Saatchi brothers …

Among some of his best known interior design achievements: the rooms of the George V in Paris, the banquet hall of the Hyde Park Hotel, the headquarters of Calvin Klein in New York, but also his long collaboration with Sting and his wife Trudy Styler who entrusted him with their various properties in Europe and the United States over a period of 14 years.

After exercising his talents with others, he decided to devote himself to this own riad to make it a haven of elegance, a place to savour calm and serenity. The softness of the ecru wall-colouring, off-set the beautiful traditional verdigris cedar ceilings and balustrades of the courtyard. At the very heart of the building, the courtyard is enhanced by the natural green of the vegetation and the touches of dynamic red of the tables and chairs that punctuate this open space. The sense of freshness here is enhanced by the transparent blue-green of the plunge pool.

The reception rooms that consist of two sitting rooms, a library, the dining room and the kitchen, and guest bathroom all lead off the central courtyard, are of the same spirit: light and soft colours, delicate decoration, meticulous finishes.

This sense of harmony and connectivity extends to the upper floors along the galleried corridors that look over the central courtyard and lead to the bedroom suites with pale tadelakt bathrooms and the office-library suite, easily converted into a fifth ensuite bedroom if required.

On the roof terrace, a second fully furnished living space allows you to enjoy the mild climate. This is not just a terrace, rather a fully functioning second living space where everything has been well-considered and designed so that comfort and serenity take precedence. For example, there is a second, fully-fitted  kitchen and a second guest bathroom on this upper level. Once installed, guests can enjoy the solarium, the protected sitting area and the dining area in complete peace while taking full advantage of the view.

Alain Mertens leaves the next owners with a delicate, elegant and friendly riad, where life is good. Here, you just have to come with your suitcases, everything else has already been thought of. The key word for this riad; serenity.
